Grey Heron - Ardea cineria
This is Ireland's largest wading bird standing 1 metre tall, and the most common and successful predatory bird to be found in Wicklow.
Grey Herons hunt a wide variety of prey, from fish and frogs to nestling birds, some adult birds, rodents and even,on occasion, rabbits. They are notorious for stealing goldfish from garden ponds and will also happily take food that is offered, especially fish.
This bird can be seen throughout Wicklow, and visits all but the very highest mountain streams and ponds.
